Almost all packaging foils are so-called multilayered structures consisting of several layers. Different layers have usuallydifferent functions. PET for example makes for stiffness and aroma conservation, PE for sealing and tear resistance, PP for water vapor tightness and aluminum for the general light protection. With easy opening the supporting layer is weakened without affecting other functionalities. Laser scribing offers excellent solutions using the various optical characteristics of the foil layers. Packaging with laser processed easy opening can easily be opened without tools.
Web-shaped material is the most commonly processed material. For scribing geometries in web direction, lasers equipped with fixed optics and beam splitters are the ideal systems. Each laser beam scribes a path onto the web material via a focusing optics which may be continuous or non-continuous.

About 80 % of all bags and pouches require cross web set-up due to the further production process, which means the easy opening scribing applications are applied in cross-web direction. Registration marks synchronize scribing geometries and film imprints. This is realized with lasers equipped with fast scanner heads which compensate the web speed and which can apply any kind of structured even at high speeds with the so-called on-the-fly method. This includes scribing of semi circled or lined tear structures on the edge of a pouch.

Various packaging applications allow scribing structures for easy opening only after the pouch is already shaped. The finished bag must be scribed on the front and rear side simultaneouly in order to assure absolute congruence of the scribing structures on both sides.

A laser perforation can also being utilized for easy opening. An easy opening with "zipper effect" can be achieved by perforating one hole close to another.
