Concentrated Laser Expertise in Medical Device Manufacturing: New Product Developments at ROFIN

ROFIN is the only world-wide operating laser maker who covers all areas of laser material processing in medical device manufacturing. At Medtec Europe 2014 (3rd to 5th June in Suttgart, Hall 7 booth B30), the laser manufacturer showcases the next generation human machine interface for the market-leading 4-axis laser cutting system StarCut Tube and the entirely revised CNC laser welder Select.



StarCut Tube - next generation human machine interface
With several 100 installations world-wide ROFIN's 4-axis laser cutting system StarCut Tube has been setting the benchmark for high-precision tube processing for medical implants and instruments for more than a decade. Last year, a newly developed tube loader and a wet-cutting module opened new fields of application. Today, ROFIN presents the newly designed next generation human machine interface (HMI).
The new HMI integrates all user interface components which are required during normal operation one a single screen. All information about system status and production progress is clearly arranged. User input and parameter modification is limited to certain designated fields. Up to now, almost all tube cutting systems have been using separate user interface screens to control laser, CNC and accessories. With the new StarCut Tube HMI this is a matter of the past.
The HMI is based on a smart administration concept which allows to easily create production jobs using so-called recipes. With the built-in user administration, access to job creating as well as to other functions can be limited to certain users. There is no longer any need for normal users to deal with the operating system, so access to it can be blocked.

 
Select - new high-end laser CNC
ROFIN's Select has become one of the most widely used laser welding systems in medical device manufacturing. The multi-functional laser workstation is perfectly suited for high-precision CNC welding with manual or partly automated parts loading. At MEDTEC 2014 the next, entirely revised Select generation makes its debut. It takes advantage of ROFIN's expertise with high-end CNC systems like StarCut Tube and MPS. The new Select features a high-class servo-driven motion system and a completely reworked CNC and laser controlling software.
The new controlling software processes CNC machine codes in the same way they are processed on conventional CNC equipment. This is true for automated creation of flanging radiuses as well as for using a look-ahead algorithm to calculate the optimum feed rate. The laser source will be perfectly synchronized with the motion system at all times, even when using advanced features like V-Track Mode or Pulse Ramping. Joystick-controlled and CNC-controlled operation are seamlessly integrated into the user interface. A new, capacitive multi-touch display and the redesigned joystick-box make setup and teach-in of CNC programs a breeze.



Now also with fiber laser – the new Select Fiber
The Select is one of the first of its kind available with a fiber laser – the Select Fiber. With its outstanding process reliability and the possibility for ultra-fine weldings - even finer than the well-known MicroWeld option - the Select Fiber perfectly meets the quality and precision requirements of medical device manufacturing.
 

LASAG's needle drilling system and compact 3-4-axes workstation PWS Mini

Steel materials are getting increasingly harder. This development, along with smaller needle diameters, has led to a considerably higher demand for laser needle drilling systems, one of ROFIN-LASAG's core competences. The sophisticated technology, combined with many years of experience, guarantees excellent quality with high productivity and minimum waste.
With its small footprint, the tabletop workstation PWS Mini is particularly suitable for cost-intensive cleanroom production environments, e.g. for welding pacemakers or endoscope housings.


Attractive EasyMark starter package
The desktop laser marker EasyMark is now optionally available with a full-fledged CAD (computer-aided design) suite. The CAD extension processes the CAD objects and includes the assigned laser parameter sets. In this way, repetition and post-parameterizing of the marking data after layout changes are almost completely eliminated.
With its high process reliability, minimum maintenance requirements and last but not least its environmental soundness, laser marking and engraving is an attractive alternative to conventional engraving techniques.
The flexible and versatile EasyMark is one of the most compact desktop laser markers on the market. The system is easy to operate, it offers a large working chamber and integrated air-cooling. Integration in individual production facilities is a breeze.

At Medtec 2014 ROFIN offers an attractive laser marking starter package. All EasyMarks systems ordered during the fair will come with a prolonged period of warranty of 36 months and an automatic door (usually an optional equipment) at no extra charge.
 

CombiLine Basic - laser marking more affordable than ever
ROFIN‘s new CombiLine Basic offers the ideal technical solution for efficient, high-quality laser marking: a standing workstation with a large working chamber, an integrated laser marker and smart operation technology. Thanks to streamlined manufacturing processes and a focus on frequently required options, the CombiLine Basic is available at low investment costs.

 

Optimized for manual loading
The wide, motorized door provides easy access to a spacious working chamber and makes application setup a breeze. There is enough room even for bulky workpieces. A motorized z-axis precisely adapts the marking head position to varying workpiece heights.

Just smart
All components, including the laser marker, are controlled by an integrated computer running on Windows 7 Professional. With VisualLaserMarker, a sophisticated, industry-proven laser marking software, the definition of simple as well as complex marking layouts is a matter of minutes. It supports matrix-codes, bar codes, serial numbers and much more. The whole system is controlled via a 15" touch screen with smart operation technology.

 

Well thought-out and practice-driven
The CombiLine Basic accommodates air-cooled PowerLine F and PowerLine E laser markers in fundamental wavelength. As access to the rear side is not required, the CombiLine Basic can be positioned close to the wall. A regular single-phased power supply is all you need.
