Hamburg/Essen, September 2009: From 14th to 19th September the “Schweißen & Schneiden“ opens its doors in Essen, Germany. For 25 years, ROFIN has exhibited at this fair and shows in hall 7, booth 420 laser beam sources and innovative laser based system solutions of the Laser MACRO and Laser MICRO group.


Highly dynamic laser systems for greater flexibility  The ROFIN Laser MACRO Group is exhibiting the latest developments in the area of remote welding with the RWSflex. With a new control unit from ABB and more flexible programming, the high-speed welding system opens up new possibilities for creating laser-step-welding of any geometry.

Due to the extended operating distance, RWSflex offers a larger working area of 1450 mm x 3200 mm x 700 mm. This is based on a focal length of 1600 mm. System dynamics have been optimized as well to further decrease non-productive welding downtime.

Further highlights of the RWSflex are its offline programming capability, which ensures more flexible work preparation, as well as the freely programmable position of the exit window of the laser beam. The cover of the traversing path protects the beam control unit against the laser beam reflections and welding spatter from the process.

RWSflex is operated predominantly with CO2 Slab lasers from ROFIN’s successful DC Series. These lasers are the ideal tools for this demanding application, with an excellent beam quality of K = 0.95. All lasers of the DC product family have a perfect fundamental mode structure ensuring the best conditions for high-speed welding with long focal lengths.

Furthermore, the RWSflex can operate with high beam quality solid-state lasers like disc or fiber lasers. “We brought more then 100 of our powerful CO2 Slab lasers into the market during the last year”, reports Thorsten Frauenpreiß, Managing Director of ROFIN-SINAR Laser GmbH. “But in some special applications there are advantages in using a shorter wavelength like they are offered by our new fiber laser. Due to this, we decided to expand the proven remote principle to the new generation of powerful fiber lasers.”

The New FL Series - Brilliant and Powerful

The ROFIN FL 010 with an average output power of 1 kW is demonstrating a welding application. The fiber lasers of the ROFIN FL Series are the ideal addition to compliment the range of lasers currently offered by ROFIN. With their high performance, they are suitable for classical cutting and welding applications as well as for new applications such as Remote Cutting.

The emitted wavelength in the range of 1 µm achieves high absorption in many materials. All common solid-state laser applications can be performed using the FL Series laser. With the multi-mode version of the FL lasers, fiber optics with diameters of 50 to 600 µm can be used. The single-mode version produces exceptionally good beam quality, typically in the range of ? 0.4 mm x mrad as well with powers up to 1 kW.

“Beside the classical cutting and welding applications the fiber lasers allow the efficient use of dynamic beam scanner systems due to its excellent beam quality”, says Markus Rütering, product manager for beam sources at ROFIN-SINAR Laser GmbH in Hamburg. “Such systems, for example the Remote Welding System RWSflex or the demonstrated 2D Scanner, enable the high-speed positioning of the laser beam on the work piece. This reduces cycle times and increases productivity.”

Optional beam switch and energy share modules provide the greatest utilization of the beam source. A single laser can be used in up to four individual work cells. These features support increased cycle times and productivity while minimizing capital equipment costs.


Select – New Functions and Detail Improvements

ROFIN has refined the current version of the welding laser Select. The Select works as an ergonomically optimized manual welding laser, joystick controlled deposit welder or high-precision CNC system with 4 axes – seamless and with a continuous, innovative operating concept.

A multifunctional joystick and a large, colored touch screen display allow easy and intuitive setup. Enhanced joystick operation features and its direct integration with the CNC control make the operation even easier and more comfortable. The new option allows integration of a shielding gas control and a laser class 4 connection into the system.

Reliable process validation plays an increasingly important role in the quality management of industrial production. The Select programs for CNC controlled welding applications provide customized access to material numbers or bar codes. They cover all welding parameters and are protected against unauthorized changes. The Intelligent Pulse Management™ provides excellent pulse stability even at smallest pulse energies and in this way repeatable results without performance fluctuation can be achieved. The integrated FTP server makes CNC data available via Ethernet.
